A Serious Medical Issue at Sea

Every Aussie should be proud of the Australian Government assistance that is there for all of us when things go wrong overseas in a foreign port. Nickolas Wong “High commissioner” and his Honiara assistants went out of their way to help us on Utopia through the  immigration/ departure paperwork including meeting us at the wharf with a game plan.
After my “heart event” we had 3 days of relentless wind squalls up to 30 knots and lightning storms panoramic with the “Ute’s” boom in the water more than once. John stated to me in 30 years he has never had so much water in the cockpit. Helm steering in the rough conditions took its toll on the chain drives more than once, fortunately we had spares. A wave even took out the barbie, positioned above the stanchions on the port side aft of the bimini but we managed to pull it back on board by the gas line !

HF and VHF rather than Sat Phone was definitely more efficient and I’d like to thank all those involved who assisted. Especially ORCV, each and every key member we shared drinks and formed mate ships with in Sandringham /Blairgowrie were awesome and professional with positive attitudes by each and every person. Charleville radio, what  a great range of personalities by voice each night sked, you look forward to each night.

John Fletcher derives his income as a Professional yacht-master within the industry so as a “master” hard decisions must be made with life and limb at risk as well as reputation. My utmost respect to John. Risk, it’s a bit higher (for me) at 63 than John even though we both feel 18. And as co skipper I was hardly in a position to argue him from making the hard decision to call for help .

My friend “Bulldog Fletcher” will push onto Japan with an experienced new coskipper “Shelly” who knows Utopia well, even finding gluten free food in Honiara  ? Good luck to them.

I very much enjoyed the personal story lines of each competitor yacht and would like to wish especially Red jacket succuss along with the Maverick crew and Tristan from Force Eleven.  Looks to me that this Melb / Osaka  will go down as one of the most challenging and everyone involved should be proud of their achievements.
