Morning Star’s all-girl Crew

When Jo Breen decided to enter her S&S 34 Morning Star in the Melbourne to Osaka double-handed yacht race, she knew she wanted a female co-skipper. Already skipper of her own all female SB20 racing team in her hometown Hobart, finding an equally driven woman was as easy as reaching out on the ORCV website. This is where she found Svetlana Paschenko.

Morning Star is one of the few all female crewed boats in the history of the race and for 2018 they’re the only pair. Svetlana, originally from Russia, has a short but passionate sailing career. The very first time she sailed, she decided it was something she really wanted to be doing more of, with ambitions to one day sail the world solo.

Joanna, on the other hand, is driven by a childhood dream. She has been blue water sailing since she was twelve years old, around the world. Acknowledging her experience as a delivery skipper, her capability and her dream, Joanna was recently granted a Layne Beechley, Aim for the Stars Scholarship. Currently Joanna is spending her days preparing Morning Star for the race. She says that they’re likely to be one of the slowest in the fleet but their main aim is to finish the race. As we all know, that in itself is an achievement.

Joanna has previously worked on repairing boats but now getting ready for the start is the driving force behind every decision made for Morning Star. She says that being held accountable for every little decision has been a challenge, along with the amount of work and cost in getting the boat to where she needs it to be.

To be team ready, Svetlana hopes to fly down to Hobart every couple of weekends to build up experience alongside Joanna. The pair competed in the 2016 Rolex Sydney to Hobart and Svetlana has flown down to Hobart a few times since. They complement each other well, Joanna’s experience puts her in the role of skipper and Svetlana excels with the mechanics of the boat.

Joanna’s enthusiasm for her sailing community shines through. ‘Now is a really exciting time for women in sailing, with a lot happening and a lot more to come’, she says. The numbers affirm a developing confidence among women sailors, with Jo being one of two female skippers lining up for the start of the M2O 2018 and Sveta one of six female co-skippers.

In a video interview shot recently at Royal Brighton Yacht Club, Svetlana spoke with Robyn Brooke of her hopes for the race and her sailing career beyond that.
