Timing, Delays and Protests

Updated 6/5/18

Calculating the results

There are three key adjustments which affect the timing and hence race results. An important fact is that race results (including Line Honors) are determined from elapsed time, that is the recorded time between the start and the finish times of each of the competitors. Published race times will be all AEST in accordance with the NoR. An adjusted elapsed time will be calculated based on delays and protests as outlined below. Handicaps are then applied to further adjust the elapsed time for handicap division results.

Retirements

We have had retirements from the following boats:

  • Nexba 6th April Gladstone
  • Utopia 20th April Honiara
  • Lord Jiminy 23rd April Saipan

Important time adjustments

1. Different start times – As most people are aware, the Melbourne to Osaka Yacht race had four different starts.

  • Morning Start started 15/03/2018 11:15
  • Bartolome and The Edge started 19/03/2018 9:30
  • The main fleet started 26/03/2018 14:30
  • Chinese Whisper started 1/04/2018 15:40

2.Delays – Due to Tropical Cyclone Iris, Notice to Competitors 5 and 6 provided some competitors with the ability to suspend racing. This suspend racing time is taken off the elapsed time for the purpose of results calculation. Any delay due to a competitor suspending racing for any other reason (eg to affect their own repairs) does not adjust elapsed time. Recognised delays due to NTC5 and 6 are:

  • Elektra 51h 28m
  • Force Eleven 82h 57m
  • Kraken 88h 07m
  • Matrix Reloaded 53h 17m
  • Maverick 85h 11m
  • Mister Lucky 86h 53m
  • Red Jacket 88h 16m
  • Runaway 72h 13m
  • Spirit of Downunder 68h 55m
  • Surfdude 67h 45m

3. Protests – The Race Committee and Competitors have the right to protest and/or request redress. These protests go to the International Jury for a decision. The Jury decision may contain penalty time or redress time. This time is added to or taken off the elapsed time. Recognised protests to date are:

  1. Protest Maverick against Race Committee, request for redress regarding NTC5 & 6, this was Denied (for Jury decision click here).  There was a subsequent request to Re-Open the Protest, this was Denied (for Jury decision click here).
  2. Protest Race Committee against Lord Jiminy, not adhering to NTC6 restart instructions, this was withdrawn as competitor retired (for Jury decision click here)
  3. Protest Race Committee against Blue Water Tracks, Outside Assistance in Sydney and non eligibility in claiming NTC5&6 delay. Decisions – Suspend racing for NTC5 not allowed, 20% penalty for Outside Assistance (for Jury decision click here)
  4. Protest Race Committee against Utopia, Outside Assistance and not adhering to NTC6 restart instructions, this was withdrawn as competitor retired (for Jury decision click here)
