Initially, Peter and Neil added their names to the Melbourne Osaka Cup expressions of interest with plans to compete on Neil’s OVNI 435. However, they quickly realised that the extensive modifications required on the aluminum hull wouldn’t meet the stringent Category 1+ Notice of Race requirements. Facing a fast-approaching deadline while juggling full-time medical careers, they found the S&S 34 yacht Bendigedig in Hobart—requiring minimal adjustments for the race.
The yacht had an impressive history. Its previous owner, Welshman Dafydd Hughes, sailed Bendigedig from Spain to Hobart during the 2023 Global Solo Challenge. Over two to three years, Hughes undertook a complete refit, including new rigging, sails, an engine, electrical systems, waterproofing, and bulkheads. After deciding he’d “done enough” of the Southern Ocean, Hughes listed the yacht for sale, where it caught the attention of Peter and Neil through renowned sailor, 2018 Melbourne Osaka competitor and yacht broker Jo Breen.
“It had pedigree, and it was an exciting opportunity,” Peter said. “We’re sure Dafydd will be pleased to know that the significant work he put into the boat is now leading it onto another adventure.” As they continue preparations and get to know the boat, the co-skippers embrace the chance to create new memories aboard a yacht as brilliant as its name.
The co-skippers, Neil McKinley and Peter Garrett, both doctors and long-time work colleagues, had shared many adventures together, sailing and hiking. “We’d talked about doing the race some fifteen years ago” added Peter
Formally known as Bendigedig, it was renamed to Curious Roo. Oh, and how do you pronounce Bendigedig? It’s “Ben-dig-e-dig”—but say it fast now!
