Jazz Player, a Bakewell-White Z39 yacht, has seen countless ocean adventures. For co-skippers Kayoko Nakano and Mitsuo Nakanishi, this race is a shared dream and dedication to making it come true.
The two first met at the awards ceremony for the Japan-Palau Friendship Yacht Race in 2020, where they competed as members of different teams. With this meeting and connection it now sees them as co skippers for the iconic Melbourne-Osaka Race, which coincides with the Osaka World Expo in 2025.
Jazz Player, was the first built after the Bakewell-White Z39 emerged as the winning design in a Yachting New Zealand competition to create the next one-design cruiser/racer. Built by Hakes Marine and commissioned in 2004 it has had 4 prior owners, with Andrew Lawrence (RMYS) campaigning it for many years and converting it in 2016 to double handed sailing.
On discovering Jazz Player, Kayoko said, “The moment I saw Jazz Player, I knew this was the yacht for our adventure,” she recalls. The yacht’s legacy, combined with its proven reliability, made it the perfect vessel for their journey.
Both sailors are accomplished ocean racers having now sailed together in the Class 40 yacht ‘Monday Night’ and often competing against fellow Osaka competitor 1122 Trekkee. Kayoko was the only female to compete in the 1726 mile 2019/2020 Japan – Palau Friendly yacht race and is a regular on the Japanese ocean races of Hachijojima and Okinawa Tokai races in a sailing career that spans close to 20 years.
For Mitsuo, he brings 30 years of ocean experience, having competed in the 1995 Melbourne-Osaka Cup aboard Shofuku and 2017 Rolex Fastnet, 2019/2020 Japan Palau Friendly and regularly competes in the Pearl and Okinawa Tokai races often racing a Class 40 yacht ‘Monday Night’.
Kayoko’s working life in Osaka connects with the Expo, and sees this race as “a perfect expression of the Expo’s theme of Designing a Future Society that Brightens Life”, and she believes it will be a wonderful event that connects Melbourne and Osaka.
Bakewell-White Z39ヨットのJazz Player（以下ジャズ・プレイヤー）は、数え切れないほどの海洋冒険を経験してきた。共同スキッパーの中野 佳代子と中西 満男にとって、このレースは夢を共有し、それを実現するために献身するものだ。
2人が初めて出会ったのは、2020年に開催された日本・パラオ友好ヨットレースの表彰式。この出会いと縁により、2人は2025年の大阪万博と同時期に開催されるメルボルン-大阪レースのパートナーとなった。
Bakewell-White Z39が、ネクスト ワン・デザイン・クルーザー／レーサーを決めるYachting New Zealandのコンペで優勝した後、Jazz Playerが最初に建造された。2004年にHakes Marine社によって建造され、Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS)のAndrew Lawrence（アンドリュー・ローレンス）が長年キャンペーンを行い、2016年にはダブルハンドセーリング用に改造した。
Jazz Playerを見つけたとき、佳代子さんは「ジャズ・プレイヤーを見た瞬間に、これが私たちの冒険のためのヨットだと感じました。」と振り返る。このヨットの伝統と確かな信頼性は、2人の旅に最適な船となった。
ふたりとも熟練したオーシャンレーサーで、現在はClass40のヨット「Monday Night」で一緒に航海し、今回出場する1122 Trekkeeともしばしば競い合っている。 カヨコは、2019/2020年日本-パラオ・フレンドリー・ヨット・レース（1726マイル）に唯一の女性として出場し、八丈島や沖縄東海のオーシャンレースの常連で、20年近いセーリング・キャリアを持っている。

大阪で働く佳代子は、このレースを「万博のテーマである『人生を輝かせる未来社会のデザイン』を見事に表現している」と捉え、メルボルンと大阪をつなぐ素晴らしいイベントになると信じている。
