Joker X2, a J133 imported from the UK three years ago, is the latest campaign yacht for co-skippers Grant Chipperfield and Peter Dowdney.
Choosing Joker X2 was a strategic decision. After finding Chipperfield’s previous yacht, a Elliot Tourer, Joker on Tourer, too slow for the Osaka challenge, the pair sought a faster, versatile option they could cruise home and eventually sell. The J133 fit the bill perfectly, balancing performance and comfort. “As soon as we sailed on the boat, we knew it was the right boat for us,” says Dowdney, who values their strong team dynamic and shared determination to be competitive.
Grant and Pete have been long-time sailing friends and have been triumphant on the 2024 ORCV King Island and 2024 Cabbage Tree race. They have qualified sailing double handed in the 2024 Sydney to Hobart.
Dowdney, with international sailing experience including the 1986 America’s Cup Defence, brings invaluable skills to the campaign. As Ronstan’s Australasian Sales Manager, he’s adept at repairs and gear management—crucial for a long race like the Melbourne Osaka. His even temperament and resourcefulness, including a newfound bread-making hobby, highlight the team’s focus on preparation and adaptability, even for the downtime in the doldrums.
Post-race, the pair plans to extend their adventure, exploring Japan before cruising back through Micronesia and Queensland. With Joker X2, a strong partnership, and ambitious goals, Chipperfield and Dowdney are set to make their mark in this iconic event.
