Katsuhiro Yamada and Masayuki Kobayashi, are co-skippers of the IMX-40 yacht Zero.
Yamada, who chose the 2000-built yacht four years ago, made several modifications to meet Category 1 race standards, including adding a bulkhead, hard dodger, solar panels, furling jib, Starlink unit, and reinforcing the sails and electrical systems.
Together, they’ve sailed Zero in various races around Japan, including the Pearl Race, Okinawa, Ogasawara, and Palau races. They’ve competed against Hajime Nitta’s 1122Trekkee in the recent Palau race.
They will sail from Hiroshima, Japan to Melbourne and hope to arrive by February.
Yamada and Kobayashi are eager to tackle the Melbourne to Osaka Race, the longest yacht race in Japan and the world’s longest north-south race. With extensive experience and a well-prepared yacht, they are ready to take on the challenge of this 5500nm adventure.

ZEROのオーナーである山田さんは4年前、2人乗りのレースに最適だと感じた2000年製のヨットを選んだ。「40フィートというサイズは私たちにとってちょうどよかったのです」と彼は言う。レースのカテゴリー1の基準を満たすため、彼は「船首にバルクヘッドを追加し、ハードドジャーを取り付け、ソーラーパネルを装備し、ファーリングジブとスターリンクユニットを追加し、電気システムを強化し、セールを補強する」などの改造を施した。
パールレース、沖縄レース、小笠原レース、パラオレースなど、日本各地のさまざまなレースでZEROを走らせてきた。最近のパラオ・レースでは、新田 肇さんの1122 Trekkeeと対戦した。
彼らは日本の広島からメルボルンまでダブルハンドで航海してクオリファイを達成した。
山田さんと小林さんは、日本で最も長いヨットレースであり、世界で最も南北に長いレースであるメルボルン～大阪レースに挑むことを熱望している。豊富な経験と万全の準備を整えたヨットで、この5500キロの冒険に挑む。
