Bond Boat prepares for Osaka

After winning the America’s Cup in 1983, Alan Bond decided to back it up the following year by trying to take the Admirals Cup. Apollo VI (A6) designed by Ben Lexcen and Peter Lowe and built by David Warren, was made especially for the task and was launched just in time for the trials, which were held off Sandringham in March 1984.

This is the historical story that current owner Paul Stuart is proud to tell you as he and co-skipper Michael Guthrie prepare Apollo VI for the race from Melbourne to Osaka next March. Back in 1984, A6 won the first race and was then in and out of the hunt for team selection afterwards, finally finishing 4th.

“AB’s boys never did race her seriously in anger after the Admirals Cup trials in Sandringham” says Paul. “Instead she was turned into a team sail-trailing boat. AB was toying with the idea of entering the Sydney to Hobart with A6 a few times, (on handicap A6 was a good chance) but instead always the showman, he went only for line-honours. AB sold A6 in 1987. I bought her in May 2006”.

Prior to recent work

Since purchasing the yacht, Paul has been working on a very loose program for Apollo VI. “Basically, I want to sail around world and do all the classic and not so classic yacht races”, Paul said. “A6 is the only Apollo owned by Alan Bond not to have done the Sydney to Hobart, so that one is on the list.”

As A6 also was not selected for the Admirals cup team, there’s some unrequented Tonner Cup contests there. “I know A6 is faster now than back in 1985, about 1 knot to windward”, Paul continued, “I’ve seen her reaching over 22kts (for about 3 hours) in 45-50kts of wind so I know she is fast and strong.”

In the last few weeks

Paul said that Apollo VI was a technical write-off when he bought her and this is her second refit under his care. In preparation for the start of the Osaka race in March a lot of work has been done, with a complete cruising interior now fitted, there is still some tidying up to be done but all the essentials are finished. A few weeks ago the mast was refitted along with a polish and paint touch-ups. “It’s still daunting as I am planning to continue sailing around the world after the Melbourne Osaka, so there is a lot more going on with A6 “, Paul said.

“As for the Melbourne to Osaka, participating is basically just the aim. We don’t expect anything outstanding compared to the newer and bigger yachts. I think A6 might actually be the most raced yacht in the fleet and also the oldest, not sure there? But she’s so nice to sail fast. She’s well balanced and doesn’t tend to round up when over powered in a gust, just lay’s over more and accelerates, as she comes back up”, Paul said.

Paul’s co-skipper Michael is is one of the long-term friends and crew of A6. He’s just completed the Darwin to Dili rally on Sue Sea, which came third in the race and will do the Raja Muda and the Kings Cup. Then home to Townsville to help Paul deliver the boat to Melbourne. Apollo VI will start moving down the coast soon and they plan to get to SYC in the first week of January. The guys will use part of their trip to Melbourne as their qualifying sail. “My plan is to do a qualifying run of at least 400Nm from Sydney’s Cronulla Marina to Melbourne’s SYC, That distance works out to be an absolute minimum of 550Nm”, Paul said.

Every skipper has a story to tell about the history of their boat. In the case of Paul Stuart it’s an especially interesting one, with roots back to Australian Yachting Mythology and it’s with an obvious pride in this history that Paul and Michael prepare Apollo VI for the marathon race next year. Paul wrapped up by saying “I was told by a friend who had dinner with Alan Bond, that he was always interested in how all his yachts were going. Right now – I’m just the current custodian”.
