Many of our competitors for the Sundance Marine 2018 Melbourne Osaka Cup use social media as their main sources of keeping people up to date with how things are going in their preparation for the Melbourne Osaka Cup race. Sibby Ilzhofer skipper of Dare Devil, is very active on social media and she caught our attention last week when some new shots of the Farr Cookson 47 appeared on Facebook. We’ve been in touch since then to get all the latest news.

Sibby says that some major servicing has been carried out recently with the latest design Andy Dovell rudder having been fitted. There’s been work done on the engine with a new starter motor fitted and an overhaul to the Sail-drive. An emergency tiller has been fitted and the transom reinforced and tidied up. The rig had a comprehensive service done recently with a full die test carried out late last year.
The campaign for Dare Devil heading down to the race is in full swing as well. “A lot of the solid crew from last year with Clippers and Hobarts under their belt are returning and we have others returning like Rob Human (30 Hobarts) and new recruits who are very experienced like Kristi from the Sailors with Disabilities team” Sibby said. “Those people are sailing with me for this years campaign – all blue water and Hobart – fully crewed. I know I’ll learn from them. Rob for example is excellent tactician at start.”
Sibby and the Dare Devil crew have also come alongside a community of ex military and emergency services personnel where they’ll assist in taking people with PTSD on sailing programs. “ I know this sort of thing works” Sibby said, “it helped a police friend of mine a lot”.
Asked about Jon Sayer her co-skipper for next year, Sibby replied, “Jon’s been busy working working working. So he’s in the background and in the near future is planning to sort the forward bulkhead for compliance, as well as some instrument and autopilot issues I have raised with him. As the event gets closer we’ll be spending more time together on the boat. He is also going to jump on for major crew racing leading up and including Hobart.”
Dare Devil’s Sibby and Jon are like all our crews who are lining up for the event in March. The next number of months will be a mixture of boat preparation and crew preparation and as has been said many times before – just getting to the start line is probably the hardest part. We wish Sibby and the crew on Dare Devil all the best with their preparation.
