Trophies and prizes are a part of most sporting competitions and for many events perpetual trophies are awarded. The Melbourne Osaka Cup commenced awarding perpetual trophies in 2013 when the race was first run as a staggered start and measurement class handicap rules – Australian Measurement System (AMS) and International Rating Certificate (IRC) were applied. A Performance Class Handicap (PHS) trophy was also awarded.
There are currently four perpetual trophies awarded.
IRC TROPHY – This trophy is the friendship bowl given by OHYC to SYC in 2011 and by mutual agreement is the IRC perpetual trophy. The designer of the bowl is Japanese artist Keiji Tsuchiyama. You can see other examples of his work on his website.
In 2013 this trophy was won by Cadibarra 8 – Paul Roberts and Martin Vaughan .
AMS TROPHY -This trophy was donated by SYC Past Commodore Kate Mitchell and in 2013 was won by Escapade – Robert Bradley & Joey Gough. It was also the Overall Winner trophy in 2013. The overall winner is determined by the measurement class which has the most entries in the event. (NOR clause 8)
PHS TROPHY – The Colin Smith Memorial Trophy. This trophy was donated to the event by the family of the late Colin Smith who was a competitor in 2003. This trophy was won in 2013 by Spirit of Downunder – Laurie & Tim Ford.
SYC – TROPHY – First SYC yacht to Osaka. The cartridge shell which makes up this award came from the gun of HMAS Warnambool which was the start vessel back in 1991. The Chairman of Melbourne Ports Mr J King fired the gun and later gave the shell to George Shaw.
Past SYC Commodore and past competitor Phil Coombs donated the trophy stand which was designed and made by SYC member J P Marquet. Another interesting SYC connection to this trophy is that at the time, HMAS Warnambool was under the command of Lieutenant Commander Robert Ware who is now an SYC member and Sailing International Judge. This trophy was won in 2013 by Cadibarra 8 – Paul Roberts & Martin Vaughan.
So for our 2018 Sundance Melbourne Osaka Cup, these four trophies will be awarded again to the successful crews in each category.
Taking a look at a photo of the awards table from Osaka in May 2013 we can see these four trophies plus a number of other prizes that were given out as well. On this occasion a Line Honours trophy was donated by Adventure Safety, a Navigators Prize was given, with the clever use of a flag an award for First Boat to Osaka was awarded and each competitor received an engraved cup to commemorate them making it to Osaka.
Our event in 2018 will once again see the awards ceremony conducted at the Tenmanngu Shrine in Osaka on May 5th. On that occasion these trophies will be proudly awarded to the crews who have proved themselves over the 5,500 NM journey between Melbourne and Osaka.

メルボルン-大阪 カップでは、2013年にオーストラリアン メジャーメント システム(AMS)と インターナショナル レイティング サーティフィケイト(IRC)が適用されたハンディキャップ ルールを初めて導入した時にパーペチュアル トロフィー(※訳者注 持ち回りのトロフィー)を開始しました。
パフォーマンスクラス ハンディキャップ トロフィーも授与されました。現在、4つのパーペチュアル トロフィーが授与されています。
IRC トロフィー – このトロフィーは2011年にOHYCがSYCに友好杯として贈られたトロフィーで、IRCのパーペチュアル トロフィーです。この杯は日本のアーティスト 土山敬司 氏のデザインによります。土山啓司氏の作品群は氏のホームページをご覧ください。 2013年のレースでは カディバラ8のポール ロバーツとマーティン ボーガンに贈られました。
AMS トロフィー – このトロフィーはSYCの前理事長ケイト ミッチェルによって寄贈され、2013年はエスケイプドのロバート ブラッドレイとジョーイ ゴーフに総合優勝トロフィーとして贈られました。
PHS トロフィー – コリン スミス 記念トロフィー。このトロフィーは2003年の競技者だったコリン スミス氏の家族によって寄贈されました。2013年はスピリット オブ ダウンアンダーの ローリエ & ティム フォードに贈られました。
SYC トロフィー – 最初に大阪に到着したSYC所属のヨットに授与されるトロフィー。このトロフィーを構成する砲弾は、1991年にスターター船であったHMAS (海軍船)ワーナンブールのスターターの砲弾に由来するものです。
メルボルン港のチェアマン ミスターJ キング氏がスターターを辞めたあと、この時の砲弾の殻をジョージ ショウに渡しました。
そして、元SYC理事長でこのレースの経験者でもあるフィル コンブスによって寄贈されたこの砲弾の殻を使ったトロフィーはSYCメンバーのJ P マーケットによってデザイン、製作されました。このトロフィーのもう一つ興味深いSYCとの関係は、HMAS ワーナンブールは当時、現在はSYCのメンバーで国際航海審判である、ロバート ワー中尉の指揮下に有りました。このトロフィーは2013年はカディバラ8 ポールロバーツとマーティン ボーガンに贈られました。
2018年のサンダンス メルボルン 大阪カップでは、これらの4つのトロフィーが各部門の勝者に再び授与されます。2013年5月の大阪の表彰台の写真を見てください。これらの4つのトロフィーと他の多くの賞品を見ることができます。
この年は、アドベンチャー・セーフティ社がライン オナーズ (優勝)トロフィーを提供し、航海士賞が授与されました。このトロフィーは急遽、大阪で旗を巧みに使用して作られました。各競技者は記念の名を刻んだ杯を受け取りました。今回の2018年のイベントで、以前大阪の天満宮で行われた授賞式を再び目にすることになるでしょう。
メルボルンと大阪の間の5,500マイルの旅で自分自身を証明したヨットマンに、再びこれらのトロフィーが誇らしげに授与されます。
