With one boat already half way to Australia, Arcadia, the second entrant to represent Japan is also on her way to compete in the Sundance Marine Melbourne Osaka Cup 2018.
Looking at the crew names alone, you may wonder where the connection to Japan comes from. The owner of Arcadia Jukka Hentunen is originally from Finland but he has spent the past 12 years working in Japan. Co-skipper John Wilson was born in New Zealand but like Jukka, he’s now living in Japan as well. The two have teamed up in recent years to sail out of the Hokko Osaka Yacht Club and so it’s only fitting that Arcadia will represent Japan in the 2018 Osaka Cup race.
Like so many entrants, the decision to enter the event takes place a long time before the starters gun fires. Jukka’s initial inquiry to enter Arcadia in the race came almost two years to the day of their departure, when a message was sent to a committee member on the eve of the 2016 Hobart West Coaster. A lot of work has gone on since then to get the boat ready and for Jukka to rearrange his working life so that he can make the trip down and back.
Jukka and John seem to be a men of few words, with only the occasional post on their social media pages mentioning that they’ll be competing. But now they’re on their way and the word is out. John posted some photos and some heart felt words on his Facebook page on the eve of their departure.

Arcadia departed Osaka around 12:00 on Saturday December 23rd and like Bartolome before her, she’ll follow a similar route down through Chichi Jima, Ponhpei and on to a port in Queensland. You can follow their progress of course on the Tracker.
オーストラリアまでの道のりの半ばに1艇のヨットが有ります。アルカディア号です。日本からの2チーム目の参加艇で、サンダンス マリーン メルボルン 大阪 カップ 2018 に参戦するために南下しています。
クルーの名前を見ただけでは、日本との繋がりはどこから来るのか不思議に思うかもしれません。オーナーのユッカ ヘントネンはフィンランド出身ですが、これまで12年間日本で仕事をしてきました。クルーのジョン ウィルソンはニュージーランド生まれで、ユッカと同じく日本で暮らしています。2人は近年北港ヨットクラブでチームを組んでいるので、アルカディア号が日本を代表することは間違いないでしょう。
多くの出場者たちも出場する決心をしてからスタートの号砲が鳴るまで長い時間がかかります。２０１６メルボルン-ホバート レース 前夜のメル阪運営委員の元にユッカからの問い合せのメールが届いた時から彼らが日本を出航するまで、2年の月日が流れています。ユッカがメル阪に出る事にかかる月日のためにヨットを用意したり、彼の仕事の調整をしたりと、とても多くのしなければならない事が続いています。
ユッカとジョンは時折彼らのSNSにレースに出る事に触れていますが、言葉少ないような気がします。しかし今、道半ばに来て言葉が発信されました。ジョンは出航前夜、彼らのフェイスブックにいくつかの写真と心からの感謝の言葉を投稿しました。

アルカディア号は12月23日土曜日午後12時過ぎに大阪を出航しました。そして、アルカディア号より先に行ったバルトロメ号と同じような航路を南下し、父島、ポンペイを経てクイーンズランドの港に向かいます。みなさんはトラッカーで進行状況を見る事が出来ます。
