Some thoughts from Bartolome skipper Keiichi Morimura as he and Masa arrive in Brisbane, completing the third leg of their trip to Melbourne for the start of the Melbourne to Osaka Cup.
オーストラリア・ブリスベンに上陸された森村氏より、臨場感あふれる最新レポートが届きました！ 昨年12月2日に大阪を出港されて、約6週間。お元気そうなご様子で、ひとまずは安堵しております！・・・・・メルボルン大阪レース2018 航海報告Leg ３（ポナペ島～ブリスベン）その3。
Passing from the Solomon Sea to Coral Sea we’re greeted with 25kt winds. Thankfully this is short lived and the remainder of the voyage is calm. For us there is only sea and sky and as the latitude increases, it’s easier to pass the night, although we certainly faced a tough situation.
ソロモン海を抜け珊瑚海に入ると早速25knの洗礼を受けるもそれほど長くは続かずそれからはそれなりに平穏な航海。寝ても覚めても海と空しかないが、緯度が上がるにつれ徐々に夜は過ごしやすくなって来る。
Our expected arrival in Brisbane is around the 10th of January but looking at the weather, which we get every couple of days, the forecast is unfortunately for 30-40 kt winds.
1月10日ごろにブリスベンに向けての最終アプローチに入る。２、３日に一回送られて来る気象情報とにらめっこしてアプローチのイメージを考えるが、どうもブリスベンに近づく頃に運悪く風速が30−40ktに上がる予想。
Our destination Brisbane, sits behind the world’s largest Coral Reef, the Great Barrier Reef and so the thought of running aground is always present. We’ll clear customs at Brisbane’s Morton Bay which is surrounded by reefs and there’s areas there with water less than a meter deep. We have the choice of sitting outside the reef to wait for the wind to subside or heading in. Finally we choose the latter.
In the end – this is the right choice.
ブリスベンはグレートバリアリーフを抱える世界有数の珊瑚礁地域でありヨット乗りにとっては座礁のリスクを常に考える海域。ブリスベンのモートン湾のドン突き約２０マイル先に目指すイミグレーションポイントはあるが、モートン湾は全てが珊瑚礁で埋め尽くされておりに浅いところは水深１ｍにも満たない。モートン湾の外で時間待ちして風が収まるのを待つか、イミグレーションポイントに強行するかの選択を迫られたが結局、後者を選択することになる。
最終的にはこれが功を奏したが、「ホンマにやばかった！」のヤバいモード全開でした。
On our entrance to Morton Bay at around 14:00 we have a 30 knot tailwind and we’re in amongst a shallow coral reef. With a No 4 jib up and in waves of around 4 meters, we run along the narrow channel, no more than100 meters wide.
モートン湾入り口で30ktの追い風を受け、14時ごろに浅い珊瑚礁海域に突入。
狭い航路（幅100mもない）に沿ってNo4ジブだけで疾走する。波高はゆうに４ｍを超える。
Our course through the reef is complex and unfortunately things aren’t going well. We abandoned this course and instead, keeping an eye on the GPS, navigate a course directly to the immigration point. Here the water at times is less than 2 meters deep and the channel narrow at only about 100 meters wide.
入り組んだ航路で、途中上りの箇所を迎え機走はほとんど役に立たず。航路に沿って走ることを断念し、GPSとにらめっこしながら直接イミグレポイントを目指すことに方針転換する。両サイドは深さ２ｍもない浅瀬、通れるところは100ｍもない狭い珊瑚礁の隙をついての操船。
The boat becomes difficult to control with a lot of rolling and pitching and there’s thick black clouds that I’ve never seen coming up in front of us. “Why are you coming now clouds!?” I complain. Lightening falls from the sky to the sea and rain is pelting down, yet sunset arrives and a new moon rises. I resign myself to the situation.
激しいローリングとピッチングでラットを持っていかれるが、これをなんとかハンドリングしているとさらに今まで見たこともないような低く真っ黒な雲がモクモク湧き上がって来る。なんで今頃そんな雲ができまんねん、と嘆いていると今度はそこかしこで落雷し始める。稲妻が天から海面にビシッと線を引く。雨が叩きつける。さらに日没を迎える。しかもほぼ新月。いつ詰んでもおかしくない。
If lightening does hit the boat we’ll all died quickly and painlessly – better than being eaten by a shark. However my buddy said he has heard a story of a guy who was hit by lightening 7 times – and he survived! Mmmm – but I don’t like the idea of being hit 7 times though.
雷が船に落ちればもうアウトだが、うたれて死んだら痛みもなんも感じないであの世やな。まっ、サメにかじられるよりはマシでんなと相棒に言うと、世の中にはびっくり人間がおって、７回ぐらい雷に打たれてまだ生きてる人がいまっせと。。。
In the end we arrive in Brisbane on January 13th at around 21:00 and alongside the immigration point it’s now peaceful like a kind of joke.
７回も雷にうたれて痺れるのは嫌やなぁと思いつつ這々の体で、1月13日JST21時頃にブリスベンのイミグレーションポイントに着岸となる。イミグレポイント周辺は嘘のように平穏至極。
By now its too late to clear customs but behind the fence there are a few people waiting. There’s Ken San and Arita San from OHYC and I really appreciate them coming. There’s also Julie who’s has come up from Melbourne and she calls out “Welcome to Australia”. It’s then I realize that I’ve sailed to Australia – a distance 4,500 NM and we toast our arrival. So that confirms my thinking. If you sail south form Japan – you arrive in Australia.
入港審査の時間がとうに過ぎてるので上陸できないが、日本から駆けつけてくれたOHYCメンバーの健さん、有田さんが岸壁で待機してくれて声をかけてくれた。ありがたい。そして、メルボルンより駆けつけてくれたオーストラリア側のサポーターJulieさんも岸壁から大声で「Welcome to Australia!!」4500マイル（約8300キロ）近く帆走ってオーストラリアについたんだなと実感する。
We use our last coke to make a Rum and Coke. Celebrations over, it’s time to sleep – and a deep sleep it is until I’m woken by an annoying buzzing. I’m attacked by mozzies all night until dawn resulting in little sleep.
舫いをとったのち、とりあえずオーストラリア大陸着岸！の祝杯をあげる。大事に残しておいた最後のコーラにラムを入れてラムコーク。祝杯をあげたのち泥のように眠ろうと寝床に入ってしばらくすると耳元で「プ〜ン」。結局大量の蚊に悩まされ翌朝までほとんど寝れまへんでした。
Mark from Mr Lucky gives us a hand to clear customs and then we move off to RQYS. By now the weather has become worse and we hear of a boat stranded off the coast. We’ve made it to our safe anchor just in time.
ともあれ大阪から延々と南に帆走ったらオーストラリアにぶち当たることが確認できました。
入国審査を終えたのち、同じく今回のメルサカ出走予定でブリスベン在住のMarkさんの好意もあり、Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) に停泊地を移したが、沖ではさらに天候は悪化し座礁しているヨットも見られた。ギリチョンでハーバーにつけられたのは幸運であった。
Now it’s a matter of waiting for the weather to settle and then set out for Melbourne, our destination.
しばらく風が収まるのを待って最終目的地メルボルンを目指します。
