An early morning welcome was extended to Katsuhiro Yamada and Masayuki Kobayashi, co-skippers of Zero, as they safely arrived at Sandringham Yacht Club on January 15, 2025. Greeted by the Melbourne team and fellow sailors from Sailor Moon, the duo was all smiles after completing their voyage from Hiroshima.
Having departed on November 24, the journey turned out to be quicker than expected. “With a low-pressure system forecast as we left, we decided to use the motor to quickly reach our next port, Tosashimizu, where we stayed one night,” Yamada explained. From there, they sailed to Chichijima to complete their qualifier before heading to Australia.
“We were blessed with good weather and managed to sail most of the way,” Yamada continued. “We only used the engine for one night along the Australian coastline. Even the windless equatorial region wasn’t an issue, though we’ll need to study the Australian currents more carefully using Windy.”
Now in Melbourne, the crew is already making plans for boat maintenance, food procurement, and sail repairs. “One of our rudder sensors is broken, and we’ve torn a sail that needs fixing,” they noted.
Kobayashi shared insights into their energy management during the trip. “Our 1000W solar panels were enough to power the freezer, microwave, and Starlink on clear, sunny days. We are careful with energy use—only heating the minimum amount of water in the microwave and turning off the microwave and Starlink when they’re not needed. The microwave uses a lot of power momentarily, but since the usage time is short, it’s manageable.”
Reflecting on their voyage, Yamada concluded with a smile: “The Earth is so big, and there were so many great things that happened along the way.”
With their arrival marking another step toward the Melbourne-Osaka Double-Handed Yacht Race in March 2025, the duo now looks forward to preparing their vessel and resting before racing back to Osaka.
