Jazz Player, a Bakewell-White Z39 yacht, has seen countless ocean adventures. As it joins the 2025 Melbourne-Osaka Double-Handed Yacht Race, it carries not just seasoned sailors but a story of dreams, personal journeys, and the bond between Australia and Japan.
For co-skippers Kayoko Nakano and Mitsuo Nakanishi, this race is a shared dream and dedication to making it come true. The two first met at the awards ceremony for the Japan-Palau Friendship Yacht Race in 2020, where they competed as members of different teams. With this meeting and connection it now sees them as co skippers for the iconic Melbourne-Osaka Race, which coincides with the Osaka World Expo in 2025.
A Yacht with History
Jazz Player’s story began in New Zealand, where the Bakewell-White Z39 emerged as the winning design in a Yachting New Zealand competition to create the next one-design cruiser/racer. Built by Hakes Marine and commissioned in 2004 by Philip and Kim Bratton, Jazz Player was the first of its kind.
From 2006 to 2019, Jazz Player was extensively raced offshore by Andrew Lawrence under the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS), competing in events such as the Melbourne to Vanuatu and Sydney to Hobart races. Andrew rebuilt Jazz Player in 2016 into a double handed racer. Later, John and Michelle Dryden of Hobart took the helm from 2019 to 2021, followed by the McKay family, who continued its racing legacy in Tasmania, including the Maria Island Race and the 50th ORCV Melbourne to Hobart Westcoaster.
The Call of the Ocean
On discovering Jazz Player, Kayoko said, “The moment I saw Jazz Player, I knew this was the yacht for our adventure,” she recalls. The yacht’s legacy, combined with its proven reliability, made it the perfect vessel for their journey.
Kayoko’s love affair with sailing began in her early 20s while living in Italy. Upon returning to Japan, she sailed on a yacht that had once competed in the Melbourne-Osaka Race. “The thought of navigating from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere in a race filled me with excitement,” she says.
Both sailors are accomplished ocean racers having now sailed together in the Class 40 yacht ‘Monday Night’ and often competing against fellow Osaka competitor 1122 Trekkee. Kayoko was the only female to compete in the 1726 mile 2019/2020 Japan – Palau Friendly yacht race and is a regular on the Japanese ocean races of Hachijojima and Okinawa Tokai races in a sailing career that spans close to 20 years.
For Mitsuo, he brings 30 years of ocean experience, having competed in the 1995 Melbourne-Osaka Cup aboard Shofuku and 2017 Rolex Fastnet, 2019/2020 Japan Palau Friendly and regularly competes in the Pearl and Okinawa Tokai races often racing a Class 40 yacht ‘Monday Night’.
A Mission Beyond Racing
For Kayoko, this race is more than a personal milestone, “This challenge proves that when you move forward with passion, the necessary pieces come together,” she says.
As Jazz Player makes its way from Tasmania to Sandringham, it is more than a yacht preparing for a race—it is a bridge connecting two nations, a vessel carrying a shared passion to inspire others to chase their dreams no matter how daunting they may seem.
Kayoko’s working life in Osaka connects with the Expo, and sees this race as “a perfect expression of the Expo’s theme of Designing a Future Society that Brightens Life”, and she believes it will be a wonderful event that connects Melbourne and Osaka.
